Dare to demand!

Recently, I engaged in a discussion with a colleague regarding the significant accomplishments of women in contemporary society. Women effectively balance familial responsibilities while motivating their partners to adopt innovative ideas and strategies. Concurrently, they advance their careers and assert their opinions confidently. After a thoughtful exchange, my colleague posed a compelling question: “If women are excelling in numerous domains, why do they continue to earn less than men?”
I contend that women themselves contribute to this disparity. Many appear to accept the prevailing situation and refrain from demanding equitable compensation for various reasons. My experiences have consistently indicated that, unless one actively advocates for oneself and articulates their needs, they are unlikely to receive appropriate recognition. It is essential to consider why others would treat individuals with respect if they do not embody self-respect and permit unacceptable behavior. This principle similarly applies to wage inequalities. Women frequently acquiesce to lower salaries, particularly when they are informed that such remuneration represents market standards and higher compensation is unattainable.
I recall an experience from several years ago while seeking employment in the United Kingdom. Assessing an appropriate salary range can be challenging, especially in a foreign job market. While resources are available to assist with salary benchmarks, one cannot predict every variable. At that time, I had a specific salary expectation, which I communicated to a representative from the organization I was applying to. His response was rather surprising; he indicated that I would never obtain a salary approaching my stated expectation due to my level of experience. However, two months later, I received a job offer that exceeded my initial request by 10%. This event underscored the relativity of salary expectations, particularly regarding one’s worth. It significantly influenced my approach to salary negotiations moving forward.
Furthermore, I recognized that requesting a salary increase after the probationary period or during employment is typically less effective and lacks guaranteed success. Therefore, it is imperative to confidently advocate for what one truly deserves and to challenge limitations that others may impose.
